So buying an external USB-C monitor for your new MacBook is a no-brainer. But the thing is USB-C related accessories are usually not that affordable, compared to USB 3.0 based ones. So, if you're using an old MacBook Pro, you may still prefer a display that supports normal USB 3.0 ports.

For someone who works with video all the time or with photos, editing, it's kind of nice to have. Jonathan Morrioson Colors are popping, saturation is the number one word that comes to mind. This is definitely as good as I expected it to be. Here comes the 'but' Well. It just doesn't work. Even after the latest macOS upgrade my MBP still crashes every time it tries to come back from sleep mode. In addition to that the external USB keyboard attached to one of the monitors is not recognized after power is cut of and turned on again.
Solution here: unplugging the USB cable from the back of the monitor. Also the sound output doesn't stay on the selected monitor but always switches back to the other one. Overall a poor experience. Well, there's no other options in the 5K space for this laptop. The screen shows up in a massive box, and once it's unpacked - it's obvious why. The 5K display is fully assembled, i.e.
On its stand, out of the box. Yep, just take it out and plug it in. 1.) There's an Energy Star sticker stuck to the screen itself, which is bewildering. Removing it without making any smudges is all kinds of fun. 2.) Volume leveling is currently broken in OS X as of 10.12.3.
The level set to one volume bar is too quiet, and set to two volume bars is too loud. Anything above that is preposterous. What on earth? Adjustment = micro changes of the volume to at least temporarily alleviate the issue (you'll end up with the volume midway between one bar and two bars - good grief). Thank goodness for this micro adjustment, because how this issue made it past QC boggles my mind 3.) Brightness adjustment is laggy in response when you press the brightness keys on the keyboard.
It does work, though, but lagged. 4.) Shutting down the system sometimes results in a giant cursor stuck on the screen, with a small cursor you can move around, but the system never shuts down. You then have to hold the power button down to shut off completely.
3.75 out of 5. 5.) Since this is an LG product and not an Apple one, a standard 1-year warranty applies, with no ability to get AppleCare, which is a real downer.
Overall, this is a lovely screen. You forget it's not aesthetically stunning like Apple's own displays - while using it, but there's certain to be a disconnect here in terms of just who is responsible for making sure the functionality is fully baked. Currently, it's not quite ready for primetime.

This screen connects and responds faster than the HDMI that I am used to. I bought this mainly to have the USB-C expansion ports. The built-in mic and camera for video conferencing is just icing on the cake. I am a full-time programmer and spend my career in front of screens. This is the best, the sharpest, the most functional I've ever used, by far. More (Read full review). Written by Paul C from Albuquerque.

I took the monitor back to the Apple store, and they replaced it with a new one.
I've had this second monitor for almost a year, and this one hasn't given me any issues. I plug in my MacBook Pro, and it just turns on every time. Maybe the first batch of LG monitors were defective?? Just keep your receipt!

Nothing but problems and issues.I ended up just buying a Thunderbolt Display on eBay for $650 and its pure Apple quality. The LG just kept turning off and on all the time on its own and the color on it wasnt very good. Recommend to get a Thunderbolt Display instead, works great no issues. More (Read full review).
